Middle Campus Summer Reading Books

With our school year coming to an end, I wanted to introduce you to the summer reading books for ANCS Middle Campus. This year, we did something a bit different. I worked with a group of 16 students in an Academic Growth Period to read and review selected books and have them decide which would be the best choice for our school. We had two winners, and the runner up was so well received, we decided to suggest all three!

The Only Ones by Aaron Starmer

Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage

Wonder by R.J. Palacio

We have several copies of these books in our library that may be loaned out for the summer. Email me if you are interested in loaning one. In the spirit of supporting our local community, I would encourage purchasing the books from Bound to be Read in EAV. Ten percent of the sales of these books will be given back to our school at the end of the summer. Little Shop of Stories in Decatur and Barnes & Noble at the Edgewood retail district have also been asked to stock up on these items.

Students/families should choose at least one book, but reading two or all would be even better. This will allow for more flexibility when we begin our discussions in a few months. I would encourage your advisees to think about connections they have with the story as they read, and take notes in order to recall more easily when we return. Coffees With Principal Underwood

Rising 8th Graders Related Arts Classes

Rising 8th grade students may express their preferences for 8th grade related arts classes this week through this form. The form was given to all current 7th graders in their Spanish classes this week. Students should review the form with their parents and turn in a completed and signed form to the main office by the end of the day on Monday, May 20.

Coffee with Director Underwood AND In-Coming Principal Cathey Goodgame

Parents and staff, please us immediately after the (Friday) morning meeting for coffee and treats as we welcome Dr. Goodgame to our school community.

Middle Campus Meds

All medicine belonging to students at the middle campus must be picked up by parent(s) or guardian(s) by Friday, May 24, 2013. This includes asthma inhalers and epi-pens.

Students returning to ANCS-Middle campus next school year (2013-2014), must update all required medication authorization forms before returning meds to the school.

Girls on Track coming to the Middle School this Fall

We are in need of 2-3 coaches for Girls on Track. Girls on Track is a part of the Girls on the Run program geared specifically for Middle School age girls. Girls on Track is all about educating and preparing GIRLS for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.

Please consider being a coach this fall. It’s 12 week commitment begining the week of August 26 and ending with a 5K Run/Walk in November. GOT (Girls on Track) is a great way to get involved. If interested, please email Anita Downing at runkevrun@aol.com

Middle campus morning meeting week of May 13

The weekly middle campus morning meeting will be on Friday, May 17 rather than on its usual Wednesday morning slot. Because of new student visit day on May 15, we are holding our weekly community morning meeting on Friday, May 17 from 8:30-8:45. As always, parents are invited to attend, and you are also welcome to stay for coffee afterwards with our newly hired principal for next school year!

Balamani Basketball Camp

This camp will focus on fundamental basketball skills, knowledge of the sport, and confidence when playing. This is done through fun and engaging repetition drills and games. Each day will start with drills and end with scrimmages.

The Coffee with Principal Underwood scheduled for Friday May 10th has been rescheduled to Friday May 17th. Please join Principal Underwood, our middle campus community, and our new middle campus principal, Cathey Goodgame, from 8:30-9:30 on Friday May 17 for coffee, treats, and introductions! Balamani Basketball Camp – Grades 5-7 (current) June 3-7 $180

Balamani Basketball camp makes it return for year 4, with Coach Balamani/Hall leading the way, Our main focus is on helping children build fundamental basketball skills, while learning about the sport in a full way.

Artistic Expression Camp – Grades 5-8 (current) June 10-June 14 $200

camp will feature 3 workshops daily in Dace, Spoken Word, and Visual Arts. Students will work to combine the different mediums in a final presentation.
