Dear ANCS Families
I feel the need to reach out to our school community as a teacher, but more as a parent of 2 ANCS alumni. As most of you know our school was started by parent volunteers that worked for 5 years before our little school even open to write and rewrite the charter, learn about effective curriculums, clean and paint the building and initially help hire the first principal and staff. If not for their sweat equity; (and of course of the teachers and administrators) we would not have this wonderful school.
When the school began families with 2 parents at home volunteered 20 hours a year and single-parent households volunteered 10 hours a year. Many families worked far many more than what was required. Families had to track their hours and turn them in. Well, we no longer do that, but that doesn’t mean there is not a tremendous need for every family to roll up their sleeves and help.
Believe me, I know we are all very busy and pulled in many directions but a little volunteering goes a long way and can actually be fun. Volunteer 1 or 2 hours a month and many wonderful things will happen. You make closer connections and friendships with other parents as well as your children’s teachers and friends. Children are so proud when they know their parent has helped the school in some way. The children feel more invested in their school. Behavior often improves and the home school connections deepen. Teachers feel valued. If you give them time teachers can almost always think of ways you can help. I know I always can.
As a mother of a college student and 10th grader, I can tell you these years with your kids are precious and fleeting. You will never regret investing your time in their school. So consider signing up and volunteering, in your child’s classroom, or helping Ms. Keller work with the students to create art for the auction. I cannot put on Winterfest without you. There are countless other ways to contribute that wouldn’t take long and would be a wonderful present for our school and you.
Thank you for your time and consideration. – Annette Wawerna
