Movie Night Under the Stars

May 17, 2014 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Pack a picnic and join us at the Middle Campus for a dusk showing of The Watsons Go To Birmingham. The sixth and seventh graders watched a portion of this film on Black History Celebration Day. They have expressed interest in seeing the remainder, so this will be a great opportunity to view in its entirety with families. As an added bonus, there are several school scenes that were filmed at the Middle Campus last summer. There is even one out back, where the film will be shown. I think that may prompt some home-team whoops!

Based on the award-winning novel by Christopher Paul Curtis, this film tells the story of the Watsons, a family living in Michigan in 1963. The Watsons are a close-knit family made up of Daniel and Wilona Watson, and their three kids, 15-year-old juvenile delinquent Byron, nerdy 11-year-old Kenny, and eight-year-old sister Joetta. When Byron’s antics go over the top, his parents decide the family needs to visit no-nonsense Grandma Sands in Birmingham, Alabama.

When the family gets to Birmingham, Grandma Sands and her friend, Mr. Robert, show them around town. Here, the Watsons discover that life is very different than in Flint – and not necessarily for the better. During that historic summer, the Watsons find themselves caught up in something far bigger than Byron’s antics; something that will change their lives and country forever.
