Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School (ANCS) complies fully with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. This notice outlines the rights that parents/guardians and eligible students (age 18+) have regarding those records.

Your Rights Under FERPA

1. The Right to Inspect and Review Records

Parents/guardians have the right to request access to their child’s educational records. To review records, please submit a written request to the school. ANCS will provide access within 45 days.

2. The Right to Request Corrections

If you believe a portion of your child’s record is inaccurate or misleading, you may request that the record be amended. If the school does not agree, you have the right to a formal hearing.

3. The Right to Control Disclosure of Records

ANCS may not release personally identifiable information from student records without written consent, unless the disclosure is allowed by FERPA (for example, to other schools your child enrolls in, or to educational service providers operating under confidentiality agreements).

4. The Right to File a Complaint

If you believe the school is not in compliance with FERPA, you may file a complaint with:

U.S. Department of Education
Family Policy Compliance Office
400 Maryland Avenue SW
Washington, DC 20202

Directory Information

FERPA allows schools to identify certain information as “directory information” which can be released without written consent unless the parent/guardian opts out.

ANCS identifies the following as directory information:

  • Student name
  • Grade level
  • Homeroom or advisory teacher
  • Participation in clubs, activities, or athletics
  • Honors, awards, and recognition
  • Photographs or video used for school newsletters, yearbooks, and displays

Parents/guardians may choose to opt out of directory information release during the enrollment process or by contacting the school office at any time.

Photos and Media

ANCS celebrates student learning and community events by sharing photos and videos through newsletters, social media, and printed materials. Families may opt out of photo/media use in the registration system.

Records Transfer Between Schools

After a student is offered admission, ANCS may request educational records (including transcripts, IEP/504 plans, and evaluations) from the student’s previous school for placement and support purposes only. All records are handled securely and confidentially.

Use of Educational Technology Platforms

ANCS uses digital learning platforms (such as Google Workspace for Education, Clever, and other instructional tools). These platforms may store student information on behalf of the school and must comply with FERPA and data-privacy requirements.
