Dear ANCS Elementary Families,
We have had quite a week so far! Milestones got underway very smoothly on Monday morning, and then the next thing we knew, the whole school was sheltering in place on the first floor due to severe weather. It was quite the day, to say the least. However, I want to say that our students did a great job moving quickly and staying safe and calm through the entire process. I am very proud of our students, faculty and staff!
In an effort to support summer reading, students in each grade are required to complete a book over the summer. It is our hope that participating in this activity will provide our students with a shared summer experience. This will contribute to them having a common language and experience beginning the first day of school. Additionally, it allows teachers to plan community building opportunities for the beginning of the school year. Classes will engage in discussions, activities, and lessons surrounding these texts when they return to school. Please know that the books were chosen to create opportunities for dialogue, not to necessarily be a challenging read for each student. It is fine for the student to listen to a recording of the book or have the book read aloud to him/her. The selected books are as follows:
- Students entering kindergarten: The King of Kindergarten, by Derrick Barnes
- Students entering 1st grade: Let’s Talk About Race: by Julius Lester
- Students entering 2nd grade: Each Kindness, by Jacqueline Woodson
- Students entering 3rd grade: What do you do with a Problem?, by Kobi Yamada
- Students entering 4th grade: The Jacket, by Andrew Clements
- Students entering 5th grade: When Stars Get Scattered, by Omar Mohamed & Victoria Jamieson
Summer reading books, end-of-year t-shirts and yearbooks will be distributed to students the last couple weeks of school. If you child is coming into the building for learning, they will be sent home with these items. If your child is learning virtually, we will have designated pick up times so please stay tuned to communication from school on when those pick up times will be.
The school will be ordering all of these things for each student and are asking that parents/guardians who are able cover the cost for their child. More information about how to make this payment will be sent home soon. I just wanted to give you a heads up so you are aware it’s coming soon.
As always, I am happy to answer any questions you may have. I hope you have a wonderful remainder of your week!
