Elementary Principal Letter

Dear ANCS elementary families,

Many thanks to Matt Underwood for chairing Run With The Wolves this year and all the volunteers who supported this event. What a great success it was. Thank you, also, to our PTCA and to Chef Bradley (and his team) for all the work getting a fun end-of-year picnic together for us yesterday. We appreciate you!

We are finishing up our Milestones testing this week. Things have gone smoothly, but it is always nice to finish this and then move on to celebrating all we have accomplished as a school family this year. We are so excited to be able to enjoy portfolio share/showcase again this year. This is a time to celebrate learning and growth, not an end-of-year class party. You should have received information about the date and time for your child’s share from the teachers. Please reach out to them if you have questions. We hope that you will be able to make it for your student. If not, please let the teachers know so they can find someone in the building to attend.

Student portfolios are used to store work that students choose and reflect on throughout the year.  For portfolios, students choose and reflect on pieces of work that they feel illustrate their growth and learning. For a showcase, students reflect on their grade level theme throughout the year.  Students have been reflecting on pieces to be included in their portfolio or that are relevant to their grade level theme showcase throughout the year.  Student reflections take place in “real time” instead of waiting until the end of the year.  This makes it more authentic and the result is a stronger reflection from the students. Student portfolios and showcase materials are shared with you and then go home with students at the end of the year.

Another fun end-of-year tradition that is coming back is Field Day. Coach Daniel and Mrs. Paez have a fun experience planned for all of our students. It is a shortened field day compared to years past, but I know the students are going to have so much fun regardless. Monday, May 16th is field day for 3-5 and Monday, May 23rd is field day for K-2. Students will move through stations. Coach Daniel would love to hear from you if you are able to volunteer.

Finally, don’t forget about the spring book fair that will take place next week from May 17th-20th and it will be in person in our library. This is a great time to stock up on books for the summer. We collaborate with Little Shop of Stories, an independently owned bookstore located in Decatur. This allows us to choose quality books that we know our students will be interested in and enjoy reading.

Just a reminder that all students will receive their summer reading book, an end-of-year t-shirt, and a yearbook during the last week of school. The school & PTCA cover the cost of these items, but we encourage you to make a donation if you are able. We welcome you to contribute extra to offset the costs of families who are unable to donate at this time. More details can be found here.

As always, please reach out if you have any questions.

Wishing you well,
