Letter from Cathey Goodgame – April 1, 2020

Dear ANCS Families,

We’re officially two weeks into HOWL now and we are so grateful for the hard work everyone is putting in to make it a success. The teachers and staff are diligently planning and posting so students can continue to engage in learning. The students are being present, asking great questions, and exploring learning in a new way. Families are supporting students by ensuring that they have what they need to be successful in this new experience and nudging them to stay focused, get off Google Hangouts, and do quality work. Everyone has an important role in this and we are all doing it together, as a school family!

Most of the student work for middle schoolers is flowing through Google Classroom so you may not be in the habit yet of checking the HOWL website. At a minimum, we hope you’ll check it every Monday morning for a video update from either Mr. Sanders or me and weekly updates for each of the subject areas. If you haven’t looked at those yet this week, click on your child’s grade level to check it out: Sixth, Seventh, or Eighth. There is also important information about Technology, Meals and visits to the Media Center.

With Spring Break just around the corner, it feels important to let you know about some changes that will occur with learning right after Spring Break. We’ll provide more detailed information on the HOWL website on Monday, April 13 and hopefully this will help you begin to plan at home:

  • Live Advisory meetings on Mondays – in addition to the Advisory and AGP assignments on Mondays, each Advisory will get together for live connections. Times will be determined by each group.
  • Live class sessions beginning Tuesday, April 14 – each day students will have the opportunity to connect with teachers from two subject areas. The schedule and more details will be shared on Monday, April 13 on the HOWL website. For now, it’s important to know that live classes will happen for one of the assigned subject areas between 10:00 am and 11:30 am and for the second one between 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm. If your child doesn’t already have those time slots built into his/her daily schedule for school work it may be helpful to revise that schedule sooner rather than later.

On Monday, the Middle Campus students participated in a webinar with Melissa Straub about social media awareness, internet safety and cyberbullying. Today, April 1, at 4:30 pm, Melissa will conduct a live webinar for parents and guardians so you can learn more about what sites students are using and how you can help keep them safe in this digital world. Click here to register for today’s parent/guardian session if you haven’t already done so.

Finally, next week is Spring Break and there will be no HOWL assignments for the entire week! We are encouraging our teachers and students to take a break from school and spend some time regrouping, resting and enjoying some time away from screens. We hope you will have a chance to do that as well.

Wishing you well,
