Letter from Cathey Goodgame – December 18, 2019

Dear ANCS Families,

Thank you to those of you who have sent items for our needs drive in support of Midtown Assistance Center. The bins are beginning to fill up and Thursday is the last day for collection so please send items as you are able. To see a list of the most needed items click here for last week’s letter.

As we approach the end of the first semester, it is important for me to share some teacher changes that will be happening when we return in January.

Beverly Caudle, 7th and 8th grade Sciences Learning Specialist, has made the very hard decision to leave ANCS to take care of some family obligations. She wants you all to know that she has truly enjoyed working with the students over the years at ANCS and wishes everyone the best.

As you can probably guess, mid-year hires can be particularly challenging, but this time we have a Year 2 CREATE Resident ready to step up to take on more responsibility for next semester. Trey Jackson has been working this year as a 6th and 7th grade Associate Learning Specialist and he is excited to move into his new role, taking over the 7th and 8th grade position mentioned above. Trey will remain in his current Advisory with Terri Linahan, will partner with Nickey Hardon in the 7th and 8th grade co-taught classes, and will continue teaching a Resource Science Class. He will continue to have the support of the CREATE team as he learns and grows as an educator.

Now you may be wondering who will take Trey’s place and we are fortunate enough to have a substitute teacher working in our building who is just the perfect fit. Beginning in January, DeeDee Peurifoy will officially join our school family as an Associate Learning Specialist and she will join Heidi Goodwin in Advisory. DeeDee has similar experience supporting students in another school and has already subbed in Trey’s position a few times so she will be able to hit the ground running as we start the second semester. DeeDee is also serving as one of our girls’ basketball coaches so she is already ANCS all the way!

Please join us in wishing Beverly, Trey and DeeDee well as they each take on new challenges in the coming weeks.

Many of you also know that KaM Schoer, 7th and 8th grade Individuals and Societies teacher, will be out on maternity leave to start off the new year. Josh Feng will be joining the school family as the long term substitute and he was in the classroom to work with KaM this week, getting to know the flow of class and starting to meet the students. Josh has experience teaching in an IB MYP school and his bachelor’s degree is in Sociology, on of the broad field social studies options for highly qualified teachers, so he is ready to step in on day one to keep things rolling in these classes. Be sure to welcome Josh when you see him around the building.

Finally, one more reminder that we have a noon dismissal on Friday at the Middle Campus. There will be no After Care or any other activities in the building on Friday so please make arrangements with your child in advance about what he/she should do at dismissal. One other important thing to share is that students will be provided a sack lunch on Friday before they leave the building if they order one in advance. Students ordering a lunch may choose between a turkey sub sandwich (turkey, swiss, lettuce on whole wheat) or a veggie sub sandwich (hummus, roasted red peppers, cucumber, lettuce, swiss on whole wheat). The sack lunch will also have carrot sticks and ranch dressing, an apple, and a milk. Advisors will gather order information tomorrow (Thursday) so please talk this over with your middle schooler tonight so he/she will get lunch, if desired.

Wishing you well,

Cathey
