Letter from Cathey Goodgame – January 29, 2020

Dear ANCS Families,

Congratulations to 7th grader Elijah for winning the Grades 4-8 GeoBee last week. I wasn’t able to see the Bee, but I heard that Elijah got every question right! Way to go Elijah! Thanks to Susan Taylor, Elementary Campus teacher, for reaching out to be sure kids at both campuses had a chance to participate in this great event.

Thanks to those of you who recently completed the Georgia school climate survey for parents using the link provided in my letter a couple of weeks ago. We’ve reached the minimum number of participants needed for the Middle Campus, but it would be nice to have a few more as the current number is pretty small. If you have a few minutes, and haven’t done so already, please complete the parent survey by clicking this link. To find our campus, you’ll need to choose your language, click Next, choose Atlanta Public Schools from the Select District menu, then choose Atlanta Neighborhood Charter – Middle from the Select School menu.

Last week during Morning Meeting the student had a chance to review some information about standardized testing at ANCS in preparation for the Kid Data Talks that took place on Monday and Tuesday. Each student had a 20 minute appointment slot to meet with a staff member to talk about their most recent MAP and growth, their Milestones performance and growth history, and how each of those connects to the work they are doing in class each day. At the end of the session, students completed a reflection page and that page along with their data will be uploaded into ManageBac by the end of the week. We would love for each family to take a look at the data and the reflection with your child in the hopes that you can also understand their strengths and see their plan for improvement. You will be able to access the data by the end of the day Friday by doing the following:

Login to your ManageBac account
Click “Portfolio” on the menu on the left-hand side of the screen
Click on [Last Name] Spring 2020 Data Talk
When you click on the pdf name, it will automatically download to your computer so that you can view it

Applications for enrollment for the 2020-21 school year are now available online and the application window will be open through Monday, March 2. Remember, there is no need for you to complete an intent to return for next year as your child will be automatically rolled over. However, if you are planning on your current 6th or 7th grader not returning next year, we would like to know as soon as possible. If you have an incoming sibling for next year, you DO need to complete an application by the deadline.

If you know new families who are interested in attending ANCS, please encourage them to complete an application and attend one of the upcoming Information Sessions. Sessions will be held at the Middle Campus on Tuesday, February 11 at 6:30 pm, with optional student-led tours starting at 6:00 pm and on Saturday, February 22 at 9:00 am, with optional student-led tours of the building starting at 8:30 am. Both sessions will be open to all families – families of current ANCS 5th graders and new families interested in the Middle Campus. ANCS 5th graders will visit the Middle Campus before the end of the school year so ANCS students do not need to attend these information sessions. If you have any questions about the application or enrollment process feel free to reach out to Maria McFeeley.

Finally, a reminder to families of 8th graders that Maynard Jackson High School is having a Rising 9th Grade Parent Interest Session tonight, Wednesday, January 29 at 6:00 pm in the MJHS Auditorium. The event is designed to give you an opportunity to learn more about MJHS academics, fine and performing arts, course requests, IB and more! There is a tour starting at 4:45 pm in the front office if you are interested in that as well. All ANCS 8th graders will be touring MJHS on Thursday, February 6 and the 9th grade counselor at MJHS will visits ANCS to speak to 8th grade students about course options/selections after Mid-Winter Break. If you have any questions about high school transition please contact our counselor, Kristin Lee.

Wishing you well,
