Letter from Cathey Goodgame – October 3, 2018

Dear ANCS Families and Friends,

October is always an incredibly busy and exciting month and this year is no exception. We celebrate our school family in so many ways, many of which are described below. While this isn’t the style of my typical letters I do think it’s important, especially during busy times, to paint a picture of all that is happening on and around the Middle Campus. If you’re ever wondering about happenings around school, much of the information mentioned below can be found on the calendar on our school website.

Wishing you well,

Cathey

  • Friday, October 5 – Flag Football vs. Westside Charter
Our Flag Football team competes each week in the Luke Sports league for local charter schools. Along with the players on the field we also have a talented and spirited Cheer Team, encouraging the team and the fans. All games are played at Badgett Stadium in College Park and admission is $6 for adults and $3 for students. To see the schedule of remaining games, click here.
  • Monday, October 8 through Friday, October 12 – Fall Break
Students are off for the entire week while the teachers and staff will spend Monday in Critical Friendship, planning, grading and enjoying some team building activities.
  • Monday, October 15 – Ultimate Frisbee vs. Friends School
Our Ultimate Frisbee team started play last year after one of our students took the steps to propose the new sport, find a coach, and even work to find a league. Ultimate typically plays as two teams – open (co-ed) and girls only – with games happening concurrently.
  • Tuesday, October 16 – Advisor Reports Available in ManageBac
Advisor Reports have, for many year, been one of ways teachers and Advisors communicate both strengths and areas of growth to students and their families. If you are the parent or guardian of a Middle Campus student you will receive more information on October 16 about how to access these reports.
  • Tuesday, October 16 – Chipotle Dine Out for the ANCS Farm
Join us at Chipotle at 718 Ponce de Leon Ave on Tuesday, October 16th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Bring in the flyer, show it on your smartphone, or simply tell your cashier that you are supporting ANCS Farm to make sure that 33% of the proceeds will be donated to us!
  • Wednesday, October 17 – No Morning Meeting this week
Each Wednesday we meet together as a school family at the Middle Campus from 8:30 to 9:00. The gathering is opened by a student group each week and features announcements, games, learning and student performances. We welcome parents and guardians as well as visitors in the community to join us anytime … except for the rare occasion like this one when we don’t have a meeting. The students will spend a little bit of extra time this week with their advisories getting ready for Grandparents and Special Friends Day on Friday and conferences the following week.
  • Wednesday, October 17 – 7th grade trip to see Phantom Tollbooth
Each year we have the opportunity to join with the City of Atlanta’s Office of Cultural Affairs to take each grade level of students to an arts venue through the Cultural Experience Project. The event tickets are paid for through the program, leaving us with only the transportation cost. This year our students will go to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, the Alliance Theatre, and the Center for Civil and Human Rights.
  • Friday, October 19 – 6th grade trip to see Paige in Full
See the information above about the Cultural Experience Project.
  • Friday, October 19 – Grandparents and Special Friends Day
On this day, we welcome grandparents and special friends to the school to celebrate them and spend time with the students and faculty. The Middle Campus event takes place from 1:30 to 3:30 and our visitors have a chance to see some student performances, engage in Advisory activities, tour the farm, and browse at the Book Fair.
  • Friday, October 19 – Flag Football vs. The Rise Schools
See information above about Flag Football and Cheer
  • Saturday, October 20 – Volunteer at the ANCS Farm
Please come help us keep the farm beautiful and productive. Bring shovels, hoes, rakes and wheelbarrows to share. Bring work glove and water for yourself! Middle campus students welcome. Elementary campus students welcome with adult companion.
  • Saturday, October 20 – Ultimate Frisbee Round Robin Tournament

  • Monday, October 22 and Tuesday, October 23 – International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) Verification Visit
We began our journey to IB MYP Authorization more than four years ago with a task force charged with determining whether or not IB was a good fit for us. Since that time we have become a candidate school and have embraced the MYP framework and philosophy while still remaining uniquely ANCS. We are excited to take our next step in the process as our Verification Team visits us on these two very important days.
  • Tuesday, October 23 and Wednesday, October 24 – Student-Led Conferences
Student-Led Conferences at the Middle Campus are very different than parent-teacher conferences you may have experienced as a student yourself or with your child at another school. The conference is led by the student, with the adults serving as active listeners, and is designed to give students an opportunity to present evidence of their progress towards developing competence in the Learner Profile Attributes, exhibiting the ANCS Guiding Principles to their fullest potential, and developing goals and strategies to improve learning over the course of the year.
  • Thursday, October 25 – Ultimate Frisbee vs. Wesley
See information about about Ultimate Frisbee
  • Friday, October 26 – 6th grade trip
Our sixth graders and their advisors will spend this day in cross-curricular learning at one of our local state parks. Our teachers and guides will be leading lessons in science, history, humanities, and community building related to our local natural surroundings and connected to the Middle Years Programme skills.
