Dear ANCS Elementary Families,
I hope you are gearing up to enjoy a fun, happy and safe spring break. Just like any other year, we are excited and ready to enjoy this upcoming week relaxing and getting ready for the big push to the end of the year.
As you know, we are observing a quarantine week the week of April 12th-16th during which all students will attend class virtually. We are asking all members of our school family to use that week to remain home and practice social distancing so that when we return to the school building on April 19th, we can do so in the safest possible way. Attendance will be taken and students will be expected to complete work during this week. Cohort 1 – The Arctic Wolves will be in the building the week of April 19th and cohort 2 – The Temple of Zoom will return on April 26th. Thank you for helping to keep our school family safe.
Many of you know that we requested a waiver to use the MAP assessment in lieu of Milestones this spring since we already give MAP each spring and it is a standardized assessment. Unfortunately, that request was denied by the GaDOE. You will see the revised schedule for Milestones that we proposed to APS in the courier. We are happy to say that APS approved this schedule and we will only be testing for two weeks rather than four!
Here are some things you need to know about Milestones.
Students in kindergarten, first and second grades do not take Milestones. Students in third and fourth grades are tested in ELA and math. Students in fifth grade are tested in ELA, Math and Science. As per state regulations, if your child is in the building during testing, we are required to test him/her. Milestones cannot be given at home due to security reasons. If you are choosing for your child to remain virtual through the end of the school year, your child will not take Milestones. If you wish for him/her to take Milestones, you can opt into testing. You should let your child’s teachers know so we can ensure the seating chart is adjusted for your student. You child can come into the building to take Milestones on his/her assigned day and then continue to attend school virtually after testing. If your child is participating in in-person learning and you have strong reservations about your student taking the Milestones, please reach out to Ms. King and me so we can support you with understanding your options.
The daily schedule at school is always altered during Milestones testing. This will be the same this year. We also know that a student’s virtual day will be altered due to testing in the building. There will be some asynchronous work for our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who are attending school virtually. Students who qualify as priority learners and attend school during both cohorts will only come into the building during the week they are testing. We will keep you informed of what the schedule will be as soon as details are ironed out.
Our assistant principal, Nicole King, is our lead testing coordinator. If you have questions regarding Milestones for your child, please feel free to reach out to her and she will be happy to assist you.
As you see in the courier, we are having a virtual book fair with Little Shop of Stories from April 12th-16th. You can watch a video about the book fair from Ms. Shelley here.
As always, I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Thank you for all you do to support our school each day!
