Letter from Lara Zelski – February 5, 2020

Dear ANCS Families and Friends,

First, I want to thank the PTCA for organizing such a fun Bingo night. A special big thank you Cathy McWhorter and Marta Leo who organized the event and to all who volunteered to make the evening run smoothly. We appreciate those of you who were able to attend and support our wonderful school, too.

Online registration for next school year started on January 29th and is open until March 2nd. Amazingly, we have already received over 350 K-8 applications! If you have an incoming sibling for next year, you need to complete an application by the deadline. You can always feel free to reach out to Kelly Dennis if you have any questions about the application or enrollment process. If you know of families who are interested in ANCS, please let them know that we have information sessions coming up on Saturday, February 8th from 9:00 am to 10:00 am and Thursday, February 27th from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm. We also offer school tours on the 6th and the 20th of February and they can sign up for those on our website.

Friday, February 21st will be HBCU (Historically Black College and University) Spirit Day. We are inviting students, parents and teachers to wear something that represents an HBCU. We encourage parents to wear their HBCU apparel to morning meeting on that day. If you don’t have a t-shirt, you can make a sign or a poster to represent your college. During morning meeting, there will be a short presentation outlining the history of HBCUs-highlighting Morehouse, Spelman and Clark Atlanta as local HBCUs. If you attended an HBCU and would like to be part of the presentation, feel free to email Tilifayea Griffin your picture and what school you attended and she will include it.

Our second round of parent-teacher conferences begins next Monday, February 11th and runs through March 16th. Please make sure you sign up for a time to meet with your child’s teachers. Conferences are an important part of our reporting system. If the times provided are challenging for you, please reach out to the teachers as soon as possible so you can work together to find a time to discuss your child’s progress.

As we are gearing up for these conferences, please keep in mind our guidelines for effective family/school partnerships. You can find a lot of information regarding these partnerships on the ANCS website. We spent a lot of time working with and receiving feedback from families and teachers to create how effective partnerships are supported by our school’s Guiding Principles. If you scroll about half way down the family partnerships page, you will find some helpful tips and expectations for all of us to follow. Just click on each Guiding Principle to read more.

I hope you have a wonderful remainder of your week and as always, I am happy to answer any questions you may have.
