Letter from the MC Principal

Hello MC families,

I hope that you all had restful breaks with plenty of opportunity to connect with friends and family. The kids definitely were adjusting to being back yesterday, but it was good to see everyone.

We have a couple of school events coming up that I want to inform you about. On Friday, December 13th we will be having our school dance. Student Council presents the Snow Ball from 7-9pm that evening. Students are free to “come as they are” in terms of dress, but they were asked by Student Council to dress to impress. As students consider what they plan to wear they should be sure to adhere to the school dress code.

Please note this is a Middle Campus event and is only for ANCS middle school students. Students from other schools including the Elementary Campus are not allowed to attend

NOTE:

Here are a few other notes

  • We will not dismiss students early from the dance. Students should plan to be in attendance
  • After the dance, students must be dropped off and picked up by an adult on Essie Avenue. We dismiss the students from the dance similar to the way we do at dismissal.
  • Leaving a dance though, students must either be picked up in the car line or they must be walked home by an adult – they may not walk home alone. For students who are being picked up on foot we will release those students directly to an adult who is walking them home.

ANCS students in grades 4-8 are eligible to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. We will hold our bee on Tuesday, December 17th at 3:15pm in the Media Center. If students want word lists to study in preparation for the spelling bee, they are available in the Media Center. Reach out to our media specialist, Terri Linahan with any questions. Please complete this participation form if your student is planning to participate. Copies of the word list are available for pick up in the media center of each campus. This is a great way for our campuses to come together to learn, practice public speaking, and engage.

As we approach the end of the semester, be sure to check ManageBac (https://atlncs.managebac.com/login) from time to time in order to get information about your student’s progress. Teachers post information about the units/topics they are teaching, how students have performed on formative assessments (check-ins within the unit to see how well a student is doing with the skills being taught), and summative assessments (the end of unit assessment). If you have any questions about your student’s progress please reach out to their teachers.

As we’ve all experienced, the temperature has dropped in the last week. It’s very important that students are dressing for the weather. I know that this is a battle that many parents have, because I have to battle with my teenagers. When it’s cold we are STILL going outside for morning recess, afternoon recess, and Physical and Health Education (PHE) classes. We only stay inside if the “feels like” temperature is 32 degrees or below, otherwise we’re going outside. Please encourage your students to dress for the weather. In true Atlanta fashion, sometimes it’s cold (sometimes REALLY cold) in the beginning of the day and then it gets warmer. As such, students should bring coats/sweatshirts/hoodies so that they can layer their clothing. Which brings me to my next topic…

The lost and found is overflowing with hoodies, sweatshirts, jackets, and water bottles. If you haven’t seen an item that your student owns recently, it’s quite possible that it’s lost and found at school. Many students are just leaving their items in the lost and found, so encourage your students to look for their items at school.

Finally, the last day of the semester is Friday, December 20th and we have early dismissal at 12:00pm on that day. All students must be picked up at noon on the 20th. There is no After Care that day. The Boys and Girls Club MAY be open – that is still to be determined, we’ll put in update in the last Courier before the break.

As always if you have any questions feel free to reach out.

Kind regards,

Mark
