Letter from the MC Principal
Hello MC families,
I hope that you all had an enjoyable snow day. During Morning Meeting yesterday when I asked the kids to turn and talk to the person sitting next to them about how they spent their snow day, the room erupted – much like the school did when I made the announcement on Thursday that we’d be off Friday. Students shared about having snowball fights, sledding, and making snowmen, and I shared that I had done the same. Playing in the snow is a lot of fun, and I’m really happy that our kids were able to have this experience. I hope that you and your family were able to stay safe and warm over the course of this weekend.
During the month of January, one of our key areas of focus is service. On Monday, January 20th school will be closed for our observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service. We encourage all of our students and families to use this as a “day on,” to be of service in the community. During Morning Meeting yesterday I also had students turn and talk about ways that they can be of service, even if they are not signed up for an official service project. Students shared about cleaning up trash in their neighborhood and donating gently used clothing from home.
As 6th and 7th grade students progress towards Community Project in 8th grade, we are preparing them in Advisory by helping them build some of the skills they will need. 8th graders have one Advisory day per week dedicated to Community Project and on those days our 6th and 7th graders are learning research, planning, and communication skills. We are having an extended Advisory Service as Action Day for 6th and 7th grade (not 8th grade, because they are doing Community Project) on the afternoon of Friday, January 24th. Sixth and seventh grade Advisories will be working with service organizations that afternoon and the students are doing some of the research and planning for this day. Look for information from your 6th and 7th grade Advisors via email about what your student’s Advisory group is planning to do if you have not seen that already. We are encouraging students to either pack a lunch or get a sack lunch that day as the focus on that day is service. We will have an extended Advisory day focused on celebrating the year in May, but we really want our students to focus on the service that they are going to do this time around. We’ll focus on celebration later.
As always, if you have any questions feel free to reach out.
Kind regards,
Mark
