Letter from Cathey Goodgame – February 26, 2020

Dear ANCS Families,

Today is one of our favorite days of the year at the Middle Campus as we have our day long Black History Celebration and Teach-In. After an exciting Morning Meeting full of dancing, spoken word, and celebration the students are spending the day rotating through sessions taught by their peers and adults from our school family and community. Though the students won’t get to experience all of the sessions below, they will get a mixture of experience and are sure to learn while having some fun. Be sure to ask your child about the day when he/she gets home tonight.

African Americans in the Media
African Dance Experience
Afro-Latin Cultural Connections
Coding our History: Learning Black History through Coding with Scratch, VidCode, and Virtual Reality
Equity in Reproductive Health for Black Women
Melanin in B Minor
Narration through Shape and Color: The Art of Jacob Lawrence
Tracking Human Migration Using Scientific Investigation
“What is race?”

Last weekend we had our second of two information sessions for families interested in attending the ANCS Middle Campus next school year. The sessions consisted of some general information about the Middle Campus, Q&A with current 6th graders, and sessions about IB MYP, Advisory, and Finding Patterns in math. The sessions were a great way for people to get a glimpse into what makes us unique. Special thanks goes to Maria McFeeley for organizing the events, to Humaira Afzal, Jennifer Dickie, and Somer Hobby for planning and running sessions and to our student tour guides and session teachers: Atticus, Braylon, Eli, Kaitlyn, Marcela, Micah, Millie, Nayeli, Noah T., Regan, Ryland, and Shoshi.

Mark you calendars for A Parent’s Roadmap to Protecting Their Children in the Digital World with private investigator and social justice advocate, Melissa Straub. This event will take place from 6:30 – 8:00pm on Wednesday, March 25 at the Elementary Campus. This is a parent-only event. Students in 3rd through 8th graders will take part in age appropriate learning experiences during the school day. Please stay on the lookout for more information as the date gets closer.

Finally, soccer season kicks off on Saturday morning for our 7th/8th grade teams playing in the APS league. Our first opponents this year will be CSK/BEST and we’ll play on their home field. The girls will kick off at 10:00 am and the boys will play immediately after. Please check the school online calendar for upcoming soccer games as well as baseball with their first pitch on Tuesday, March 10. Go Wolves!

Wishing you well,
