Letter from the MC Principal

Middle Campus Families,

This week has been an exciting one as we welcomed back almost all of our teachers and staff and more Arctic Wolves students as well. We look forward to seeing even more students returning for the first time next Monday as the students from The Temple of Zoom.

You may have heard your 6th or 7th grader talking about summer reading selections for this summer. Please do not purchase your child’s book selection on your own. The school is ordering the books from Little Shop of Stories and will provide the selection to each student. There will be an opportunity for families to donate the cost of a book to the school and, of course, your child is encouraged to read more than one book over the summer so there will be plenty of book-buying chances for your reader.

As mentioned in last week’s letter, Middle Campus students will participate in the Spring MAP Administration next Monday and Tuesday. We are looking forward to seeing this progress data from all students and ask that you encourage your child to do their best on these assessments. Testing will begin at 9:30 each morning, the daily schedule will be modified both Monday and Tuesday, and student Google Calendars will be updated to reflect those changes.

As you all likely know by now, Milestones testing is happening across the state of Georgia in the coming weeks, including at ANCS. Milestones testing is only required for in-person learners and will take place for those students during their hybrid cohort weeks, May 3 for Cohort 1 and May 10 for Cohort 10. While we are happy to only be testing for two weeks, there are many layers involved in the schedule so I’m planning to share the details as often as possible over the coming weeks.

The information below explains what will happen for your child during the two Milestones testing weeks. All weekly references below are for Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Wednesdays continue to be 100% virtual for everyone with Middle Campus students online from 9:30 to noon. Before you continue reading, be sure you have two pieces of information: 1) your child’s Advisory so you can identify/confirm the correct cohort, and 2) whether or not your child will be taking Milestones. When you’re ready, keep reading.

Remember that all students are part of a cohort whether they are learning in person or virtually. Confirm your child’s Cohort group by checking this list:

Cohort 1 Advisory groups: 8th grade – Bubes, Feng/Jones, Rios/Scott; 7th grade – Clemmons, Pettes/Struttmann, Bennett/Goodson; 6th grade – Afzal, Jackson/Linahan, Gordy/Wood

Cohort 2 Advisory groups: 8th grade – Goodwin, Hinton, Armstrong/Hardon; 7th grade – Taylor, Baruch, Jackson/Prather; 6th grade – Cambor, Griffin/Smith, Dickie/Hanes

Now, find the one section below that applies to your child. Your child will only fall into one of the categories below so you don’t need to read all of the different options:

Cohort 1 Students taking Milestones

In-person for testing week, virtual for non-testing week (even for students who typically attend both weeks)

    • Week of May 3 – In-person 9:30 – 3:00 for testing and other academic activities
    • Week of May 10 – Virtual 9:30 – 3:00 – assignments provided by subject area teachers, regular live check-ins with advisors.

Cohort 1 Students not taking Milestones (this includes both 100% virtual students who are not required to take Milestones and those who have opted out of Milestones)

Virtual for both weeks

    • Week of May 3 – Virtual for less than full school days as peers will be testing in person and teachers will be supervising testing. Tentative live engagement times expected to be 10 am – noon each day and additional time Monday, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm, and Thursday, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm.
    • Week of May 10 – Virtual 9:30 – 3:00 – assignments provided by subject area teachers and regular live check-ins with advisors.

Cohort 2 Students taking Milestones

In-person for testing week, virtual for non-testing week (even for students who typically attend both weeks)

    • Week of May 3 – Virtual 9:30 – 3:00 – assignments provided by subject area teachers and regular live check-ins with advisors.
    • Week of May 10 – In-person 9:30 – 3:00 for testing and other academic activities

Cohort 2 Students not taking Milestones (this includes both 100% virtual students who are not required to take Milestones and those who have opted out of Milestones)

Virtual for both weeks

    • Week of May 3 – Virtual 9:30 – 3:00 – assignments provided by subject area teachers and regular live check-ins with advisors.
    • Week of May 10 – Virtual for less than full school days as peers will be testing in person and teachers will be supervising testing. Tentative live engagement times expected to be 10 am – noon each day and additional time Monday, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm, and Thursday, 2:00 pm – 3:00pm.

Whew! Did you figure it out? It’s definitely complicated and if you can hone in on just your child that makes it all much easier. As always, if you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to ask.

Wishing you well,

Cathey
