Letter from the MC Principal

Dear Middle Campus Families,

What a joy it has been to have your kids in the building with us for the first two days of school! Tuesday started with the typical middle school feel: 6th graders full of nervous energy, 7th graders trying to find their place as the “middle children”, and 8th graders looking pretty sleepy! On day 2 we started to settle in, getting used to our new normal together.

As you might imagine, living near a middle school campus has its ups and downs for our neighbors. Most enjoy, or at least have gotten used to, the buzz of tweens and teens but some parts of the day are challenging, especially arrival and dismissal. So that we can continue to be good neighbors, please help us with the following:

  • Be mindful of your speed on Essie Avenue and the surrounding streets. The speed limit is 25 and we would love it if were closer to 15 or 20 when school is in session just to be sure we all stay safe.
  • Notice that there is a stop sign at the end of Essie and two crosswalks. Remember to fully stop and yield to anyone in the crosswalks.
  • Use only the school side (right side) of Essie Avenue for drop off and pick up. Do not drop off or pick up on Delaware or Emerson.
  • If you need to park for any reason, be sure not to block a driveway.

Thank you in advance for keeping us in the good graces of our amazing neighbors.

Office Hours will begin on Monday, August 9. Office Hours is an opportunity for students to access their teachers and the concept is one of the many successful pieces of learning for us from last year’s HOWL experience. The kids and teachers both found it very beneficial for students to be able to pop in to ask questions so we’re providing that opportunity in person this year.

Teachers and Advisors will have assigned days to be available from 3:10 to 4:00 to answer any questions students might have. Here are some important things to know about Office Hours:

  • Students can stay for some or all of the Office Hours time (3:10 – 4:00).
  • Students can check in with multiple teachers during Office Hours.
  • When students leave the building they must sign out at the front desk near the gym.
  • At 4:00, all students must either leave campus after signing out, go to After Care if registered, or go to Athletics practice if applicable.
  • The adults available on Mondays and Wednesdays are:
Individuals & Societies (Cambor, Feng and Pettes), Language & Literature (Goodwin, Struttmann, and Wood), Physical & Health Education (Hinton and Lemon), Spanish (Smith and Taylor), Hanes, Prather and Rios (Wednesdays only).
  • The adults available on Tuesdays and Thursdays are:
Arts (Bubes and Dewey), Design (Baruch and Carter), Mathematics (Afzal, Bennett and Clemmons), Sciences (Hardon, Jackson, and Stejskal), Armstrong, Jones, Linahan, and Rios (Thursdays only).

Finally, a reminder that Monday, August 9 is our first late arrival day. Students who are registered for Early Care can arrive between 8:00 and 9:30. All Early Care participants should enter though the main entrance by the school sign regardless of grade level. Grab and Go Breakfast will be available for Early Care participants between 8:00 and 8:25. All other students should arrive between 9:30 and 9:55 so they can be seated in Advisory no later than 10:00.

As always, please don’t hesitate if you have any questions for us.

Wishing you well,
