Letter from the MC Principal

Hello MC families,

I hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I was definitely tired on Monday right along with the kids. However, it’s been great having everyone back in the building!

We hired a new Office Manager, Julia Knox (the kids call her Ms. Julia), and she started with us this week. I introduced Ms. Julia during Morning Meeting. She is working diligently to get up to speed on our various processes and procedures. We have instituted a sign out procedure to help us keep a record of students who are being signed out early. Please come inside to the security desk (right by the visitor’s entrance) to sign your students out. Thank you for your patience as we implement this new procedure.

The winter dance for the Middle Campus will take place on Friday 12/8 in the gym at the Middle Campus from 7-9 pm. Please note this is a Middle Campus event and is only for ANCS middle school students. Students from other schools including the Elementary Campus are not allowed to attend.

8th grader Emilia Foster is organizing a toy drive (flyer here) for the Atlanta Children’s Shelter. This shelter serves unhoused children and teens, however during the holiday season their toy drives often lack donations for teens and older children. Items like sports equipment, earrings/necklaces/bracelets, hats, and art supplies often suit this audience so please participate in this drive. There will be boxes placed by the entrance at the Middle Campus and we are accepting donations through Monday, December 8th.

There are several other things coming up at the Middle Campus in the month of December, so take a look at the headings below for information about some of those upcoming items. Have a great week and if you have any questions feel free to reach out.

Kind regards,

Mark

Spelling Bee
ANCS students in grades 4-8 are eligible to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. We will hold our bee on Tuesday, December 12 at 3:30 pm in the MC Library. Please reach out to our media specialist, Terri Linnehan with any questions. Please complete this participation form if your student is planning to participate. Copies of the word list are available for pick up in the media center of each campus. This is a great way for our campuses to come together to learn, practice public speaking, and engage.

Fall Sports Athletics Banquet
There will be a banquet for participants in our fall sports (cheer, cross country, flag football, ultimate frisbee, and volleyball) on Tuesday, December 12th at 6:30pm in the gym. Look for more information via email from our Athletic Director Coach D.

International Travel Opportunity
In summer 2022, 8th-grade teacher Heidi Goodwin led students on a service learning trip to Peru through EF Educational Tours. This program, with over 50 years of experience, focuses on older students, typically those in or just completing 8th grade. Over 20 students are scheduled for a Peru trip in summer 2024, and a Dominican Republic trip is planned for Spring Break 2025 for current 7th graders. The trips involve projects like reforestation and water purification, offering students a cultural learning experience. An informational meeting is set for December 5th at 6:00 pm in the Media Center; RSVP for attendance.

School Dance (Fri. 12/8; 7:00-9:00pm)
The school dance will take place on Friday, December 8th, from 7:00-9:00 pm at the Middle Campus gym. Students are welcome to “come as they are” or “dress to impress” but must adhere to school-appropriate attire. Note that after the dance, students must be picked up or walked home by an adult on Essie Avenue for safety reasons.

Dressing for the Weather (Reminder)
As it gets colder outside please encourage your students to dress for the weather. Even when it’s cold we continue to go outside for morning recess, afternoon recess, and Physical and Health Education classes so please encourage them to bring coats and wear pants (not shorts) as we move further into the winter.
