Letter from the MC Principal

Hello MC families,

I hope that you all had restful and enjoyable Spring Breaks. As we prepare to close out the year there are several academic objectives for our students left to reach. In the next few weeks students are completing their portfolios, we have MAP testing next week, and the Georgia Milestones test is during the first two weeks of May. In addition there are summative assessments for students to complete so they will need to make sure they are working to continue to show growth in their classes.

It’s important for our students to finish strong so please encourage them to give their all. We are seeing students starting to act like the year is over already (especially the 8th graders), so please push your kids. We also have students who think the year is over after the Milestones test and that is certainly not the case either. There will be school work to do up until the end of the year. Additionally, please check in on your students’ well-being. This can also be a stressful time for our kids, so encourage them to take breaks as needed and to check in with trusted adults if they need support.

I’ve listed the dates of some of the year-end items below:

MAP Testing

MAP testing will take place next week on Wednesday 4/17 and Friday 4/19.

Portfolios

In Advisory students are currently putting the finishing touches on their portfolios. Students have been working on their Portfolios all year, but that work has ramped up in the last two months. The last couple of years we have introduced the Portfolio concept earlier in the year so that students can work on them over the course of a longer period of time. Students have had multiple hours of time during Advisory to work on their Portfolios over the course of this time frame.

  • 8th grade portfolios are due on Friday, April 12th.
  • 6th and 7th grade Portfolios are due on Friday, April 19th, because their Exhibitions are later.

Exhibitions

Exhibition success is not about presentation skills, it’s about content. Your students have gotten, and will continue to get, lots of time in Advisory to work on their Exhibitions so please encourage them to use their time wisely during school. Similar to student-led conferences, you will be able to see an indication of the work that students are putting in when their Exhibitions are complete. For 8th grade families, you will soon hear from your student’s advisor with an email to schedule your student’s exhibition.

  • 8th grade Exhibitions will take place the week of April 22nd-26th.
    • 8th graders conduct their Exhibition before a panel that includes their Advisor (someone with lots of context for the student), an additional staff member (someone who knows our school), and a community member who provides an outside voice to the panel. The panelists individually score the Exhibitions using a rubric and then they come together to deliberate and decide on the student’s final score.
  • 6th and 7th grade Exhibitions will take place the week of Monday, May 13th. Advisors will reach out to schedule these Exhibitions in the next few weeks.
