New Safety Feature: Visitor Management System

We are committed to making sure our school buildings are as safe and secure as possible. We have received a state grant to partially fund a campus-wide communications system so that we are better able to respond to emergencies. We have had safety technicians complete thorough security inspections at both campuses and will be incorporating their feedback into future plans. We have also received funding from Atlanta Public Schools (APS) to deploy a schoolwide visitor management system (VMS). That system will be activated on January 21, 2020.

The VMS units, already in place at most APS schools, scan visitor’s driver’s licenses and run an instant, real-time check against law enforcement databases to help ensure that no one accessing our buildings poses a potential threat to our children. This system will only be used where visitors are currently required to sign in manually. In the event that any visitor is without a driver’s license or state-issued identification, the visitor’s name and date of birth will suffice to run the check.

While we acknowledge that this change may feel like a departure from our open culture, we feel strongly that this is a necessary step to ensure we are providing the safest environment for our school family. Please be patient with our front desk staff as we all become accustomed to this new feature, and – as always – feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions or concerns.
