New at the Middle Campus: Debate Club

The newly formed debate club at the middle campus was created as part of two 8th graders’ community projects. The group will use the Lincoln-Douglas debate format (as opposed to forensic debate), and will focus on a single topic: the Atlanta police and fire training facility – often referred to as “Cop City” – to be built in DeKalb County,.

The Lincoln-Douglas format gives the students the best opportunity to practice extemporaneous speaking, critical thinking, and thoughtful analysis in a variety of categories. The “Cop City” conversation is an expansion of a series of guided discussions 8th graders have participated in as part of Heidi Goodwin’s Language and Literature class.

The Debate Club is open to all middle grades students, and meets on Mondays in Ms. Afzal’s classroom immediately after dismissal. The club is supported by ANCS Executive Director Chuck Meadows.
