Sexual Health Unit – 7th & 8th Grade

Dear Families of 7th and 8th graders,

Your student will begin their sexual health unit in Health class in May. We will use lessons provided by Project School Wellness, a medically accurate, age-appropriate comprehensive sexual health education curriculum aligned with the national health education standards. The goals of the curriculum are to prevent teen pregnancy, STDs and sexual violence, and to increase family communication about sexual health related topics such as puberty, dating, sex and abstinence.

The program builds skills to support young people in remaining abstinent, as well as teaching about other methods of disease and pregnancy prevention. It promotes respectful communication, and builds skills for healthy relationships.

The lessons provide a protocol for teachers when answering student questions about values that includes referring students back to families to learn their specific values. As a result, students may come home with questions about the values and expectations you have for them regarding these topics. We hope this will provide a meaningful opportunity for you to talk about these important topics together.

This comprehensive teaching unit includes lessons connected to the following topics:

  • Importance and Value of Sex Ed
  • Puberty (7th grade only)
  • Personal Hygiene
  • The Reproductive Systems
  • Pregnancy & Contraceptives (8th grade only)
  • Abstinence (8th grade only)
  • Consent & Sexual Safety
  • Building Healthy Relationships
  • Decision Making
