Element of Focus: Engage the whole child

As you may know, our school’s mission is expressed in five elements. Each school year we select one of those five elements to focus special attention on. This year we are emphasizing our commitment to do our best to meet our students’ needs in every category. This important part of our mission is no small undertaking – it permeates every aspect of what we do each day – but it has never been more important than right now. The school shares a portion of the responsibility for the mental and emotional healing that our students need while we navigate a global public health crisis. As we continue to focus on their academic advancement and intellectual growth, we will also be sure we maintain and expand our support of their social-emotional and physical well-being.

Expanding our farm and gardening program. We have entered into a partnership with experienced farmers that will provide our students additional opportunities to learn about plants, the local food economy and increase the amount of produce grown onsite for our award-winning nutrition program. We have begun an expansion of the farm space at both campuses, and will be building that space into everyday learning for our students.

Strengthening our counseling resources. We are growing our counseling programs at both campuses to provide students with additional resources and support outside of the classroom. Leslie Jo Tottenham and Kristin Lee, our elementary and middle campus counselors, respectively, have shifted from part to full-time employment. They will be even more available to support the needs of our students.

Continued focus on academic growth. The school has a very comprehensive plan to do everything we can to support students academically given the challenges of in-person learning during the pandemic. From adding academic support to AfterCare, the new math-focused Power30 at the middle campus, to the heightened focus on phonics at the elementary campus, we will continue to be very active and deliberate in our efforts to develop lifelong learners.

These initiatives will be added to what is already a comprehensive focus on the whole child that makes our school unique. We will also expand that same approach to every member of our school family – parents/caregivers, faculty/staff and our governing board.

Our Mission Elements:

  1. Build an empowered and inclusive community of students, parents, and educators
  2. Engage the whole child—intellectually, social-emotionally, and physically
  3. Help all students to know themselves and to be known well by their community
  4. Challenge each student to take an active role as an informed citizen in a global society
  5. Collaborate with the larger community to advocate for student-centered schools
