Student Chromebook Guidelines
2026–2027 School Year

Purpose
Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School (ANCS) is committed to providing every student with equitable access to technology that supports learning, creativity, communication, collaboration, and academic success. Chromebooks are instructional tools intended to enhance teaching and learning and prepare students for success in an increasingly digital world.

All Chromebooks remain the property of Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School and are assigned to students for educational purposes only.

Student Responsibilities
Students are expected to:

  • Handle their Chromebook with care at all times.
  • Use the Chromebook for educational purposes in accordance with the ANCS Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Bring the Chromebook to class each day. (MC students only)
  • Immediately report any damage or technical issues to a teacher or administrator.
  • Never intentionally damage, misuse, or tamper with school-issued technology.
  • Return the Chromebook to the appropriate Chromebook bin for charging daily.
  • Failure to follow these expectations may result in both behavioral consequences and financial responsibility.

Chromebook Care
Students are expected to care for their Chromebook by:

  • Carrying the device with both hands at all times.
  • Keeping it safely in their backpack when moving from class to class (MC).
  • Keeping food and beverages away from the Chromebook.
  • Never placing heavy objects on top of the device.
  • Never removing inventory stickers or school identification labels.
  • Never attempting to repair, alter, or disassemble the Chromebook.
  • Protecting the Chromebook from excessive heat, moisture, or other environmental hazards.

Financial Responsibility
Chromebooks are valuable instructional resources. Families are responsible for the cost of repairs or replacement when damage results from:

  • Negligence
  • Misuse
  • Intentional destruction
  • Failure to exercise reasonable care
  • Loss or theft resulting from negligence

Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Broken screens
  • Damaged keyboards
  • Broken hinges
  • Liquid damage
  • Internal hardware damage
  • Intentional vandalism
  • Lost or stolen Chromebooks resulting from improper care

Repair and Replacement Fees

  • Broken Screen – $50
  • Broken Keyboard – $75
  • Device Replacement (Lost, Intentionally Destroyed, or Second Major Accidental Damage) – $200

ANCS reserves the right to assess the actual repair or replacement cost if damage exceeds the amounts listed above or involves components not specifically identified in this schedule.

Progressive Accountability
Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School recognizes that accidents can occur. However, repeated preventable damage or intentional misuse demonstrates a failure to properly care for school property.

First Accidental Damage
If the damage is determined to be accidental:

  • Parents or guardians will be notified of the applicable repair fees for subsequent instances of damage.
  • Students may receive additional instruction regarding proper Chromebook care.

Second Accidental Damage
A second incident of accidental damage that renders the Chromebook unusable during the same period of device assignment demonstrates a pattern of preventable misuse.
As a result:

  • The applicable damage fee may be assessed.
  • A parent conference may be required.
  • Students may receive behavioral consequences consistent with the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Chromebook privileges outside of instructional use may be limited.

Intentional Damage or Gross Negligence
Intentional destruction or reckless misuse of school-issued technology may result in:

  • Assessment of the full replacement fee
  • School disciplinary action consistent with the Student Code of Conduct

Behavioral Consequences
Because Chromebooks are instructional tools, intentional misuse is considered both a behavioral and financial matter.

Examples include:

  • Throwing or striking a Chromebook
  • Purposely cracking the screen
  • Removing keyboard keys
  • Tampering with internal hardware
  • Deliberately damaging another student’s Chromebook
  • Using the Chromebook in violation of school policies

Behavioral consequences may include, but are not limited to:

  • Restorative conversations
  • Parent conferences
  • Detention
  • Loss of technology privileges
  • In-school suspension
  • Out-of-school suspension
  • Additional consequences outlined in the ANCS Student & Family Handbook

Payment Expectations
Families will receive written notification of assessed Chromebook fees. Payment may be made through Linq. Families experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to contact school administration to discuss available payment arrangements before payment deadlines.

Outstanding Chromebook Fees
Outstanding Chromebook fees remain the financial responsibility of the student’s family.
Students with unpaid Chromebook repair or replacement fees may become ineligible to participate in optional school-sponsored activities until:

  • The balance has been paid in full; or
  • An approved payment arrangement has been established with the school and upheld.

Serious delinquency may result in being reported to an outside creditor.

Nothing in these guidelines will prevent students from participating in required instructional activities or educational programs.
