Our dedication to promoting healthy living and environmental stewardship springs to life through hands-on learning experiences and abundant harvests on our School Farm.

ANCS’s Farm-to-School Journey

Our school’s unwavering dedication to sustainable living and fostering healthy eating habits has been the driving force behind our farm-to-school program, which was initiated several years ago. Rooted in the belief that there should be a direct link between the fresh, nutrient-rich food served in our cafeteria and the very plants thriving in our soil, this program has been instrumental in shaping our students’ understanding of food production and consumption.

From the outset, our aim has been clear: to integrate gardening seamlessly into the elementary curriculum and provide middle campus students with hands-on opportunities to cultivate their own food. This holistic approach to education not only nurtures a sense of responsibility towards the environment but also instills in our students the value of self-sufficiency and healthy living.

Sustainability Meets Education

In September 2021, we embarked on an exciting new chapter in our commitment to sustainability by establishing our very own School Farm. Spread across both campuses, this innovative venture boasts an impressive array of over 100 5′ X 10′ raised beds, complemented by a greenhouse and storage shed. Equipped with state-of-the-art irrigation systems, our farm ensures optimal growing conditions year-round, allowing students to witness the miracle of seed-to-table firsthand.

What sets our School Farm apart is its seamless integration into the academic curriculum, led by School Farm Specialist Nichole Lupo. Through hands-on activities and real-world experiences, students across all grade levels are empowered to explore the interconnectedness of agriculture, environmental stewardship, and sustainable living. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, we not only enrich their educational journey but also cultivate a deep appreciation for the natural world.

The Impact on Nutrition and Community

Perhaps the most gratifying aspect of our program is its role in supplying our nutrition program with an abundance of fresh, locally sourced produce. By nourishing both body and mind, our students play a pivotal role in creating a healthier, more sustainable future for themselves and generations to come. Our School Farm isn’t just about growing food; it’s about nurturing a sense of community, fostering meaningful connections, and sowing the seeds of a brighter tomorrow.

We welcome the school family to join us for farm work days, where everyone can get their hands dirty and contribute to our thriving agricultural community.
