From the EC Nurse
Hello ANCS Families! My name is Leigh Hicks and I am the school nurse at the Elementary Campus. I am an Atlanta native and I have been a Grant Park resident for the last 25 years. I am shocked at how quickly the time has flown by, but this will be my 15th year at ANCS. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia State University and obtained my nursing degree from the University of North Georgia. I began my nursing career in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Egleston (CHOA) and CHOA was my “home” for 14 years before moving to ANCS. My background also includes having worked as an EMT, Air Medical/Ground Transport dispatcher and as an Anesthesia Tech before obtaining my nursing degree. I am also currently certified as a CPR/First Aid/AED instructor and a Stop The Bleed® instructor.
One of the many things that I love about school nursing is that no two days are the same and that I never know ahead of time what the day will bring. My days are filled with illness & injuries, chronic health conditions & medications, broken bones & scraped knees, immunization audits & lice checks, nervous bellies and loose teeth, 504 meetings & hearing/vision screenings (to name a few). But, they’re also filled with unexpected hugs and big smiles, proud high-fives, and “I’m feeling all better”. In addition to the daily care of our students and staff, there are some exciting Health & Safety projects on the calendar for the 2024 -2025 school year. Those projects will include CPR/AED/First Aid training for ANCS staff, Stop The Bleed training, mass vision screenings (more info to come), and obtaining the Heart Safe School designation from Project S.A.V.E.
In my life outside of work, I am the mom to an 18 year old daughter (ANCS alum), who just started her Freshman year at Montana State University. My husband, Dave, and I love to travel, ski, ride bikes and enjoy anything involving the outdoors. We don’t consider ourselves “empty nesters” because we are also “parents” to a very needy and very goofy dog, Otis.
I consider myself very fortunate that I get to spend every day learning and growing alongside all of the amazing students and staff at ANCS. I am looking forward to another wonderful school year and working with all of the ANCS families to keep our students healthy, safe and ready to learn. As always, I am available to answer any questions you may have. Please feel free to contact me at
